Hutchison was brought up in Assynt where he worked as a fisherman and crofter while experimenting with stop frame animation, oil painting and sculpture. He learned video editing at Edinburgh's VAC and did Electronic Imaging at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and then a MA in Screenwriting at Screen Academy at Edinburgh Napier. He has directed and produced several feature films,documentaries, digital animation and organised exhibitions. He also writes and illustrates books.
